Fair Isle beach cleaning heroes
Over the last few summer weeks, FIMRO’s seasonal Education Officer David Parnaby has been busy coordinating some important citizen science and marine monitoring activities with community members and visitors
Last week saw two beach cleans take place; one at North Haven and one at Sompal/Leestit.
Following Marine Conservation Society standardised methodology, volunteers collected more than 16 kg of rubbish! This litter was then sorted and identified into different types of litter.
The main groups of marine litter collected were characterised as plastic bottles, bits of buoys and floats as well as general plastic fragments. This data helps litter to be traced back to the source and supports the Marine Conservation Society’s campaign for change.
Well done and thank you to all those involved!
