The 2025 survey is the fourth consecutive inshore fish survey to be completed around Fair Isle which took during August 2025. Together with a dedicated sandeel survey carried out in May 2025, it represents the most ambitious fisheries survey programme undertaken around the island to date. The survey is building an increasingly valuable long-term picture of Fair Isle’s marine ecosystem and will help strengthen the scientific evidence needed to further inform potential future management of the Fair Isle Demonstration and Research MPA.

Monday 1st – Sunday 7th June 2026 marks #VolunteersWeek so we’d like to give a huge shout out and thank you to our four dedicated Fair Isle Marine Research Organisation volunteer trustees Neil, Steven, Susannah and Fiona who work tirelessly to support the advancement of the Fair Isle Demonstration and Research MPA project and marine citizen science in Fair Isle.

Over the weekend FIMRO’s seasonal Education Officer David Parnaby led a group of brilliant volunteers made up of islanders, visitors and guests staying at the Fair Isle Bird Observatory to carry out a beach clean at Leestit.
